The Original Keybar

Through user research and self-experimentation a lack of locking tools was strongly felt. It was most apparent with tools such as the screw drivers, the multi-utility knife and the bottle bomber. It was essential to add this function without adding bulk and still retaining the customizability.

Standardization

The tools needed standardization for ease of use, consolidation of inventory and manufacturing optimization.

Tool thickness for old tools was, 0.04", 0.08", 0.10", 0.125", 0.13". Assembly of tools of varied thicknesses becomes finicky.

New tools were standardized to 0.08" and liner to 0.04". Tool geometry was redesigned to ensure the same strength.

Design

The designing process involved almost 100 iterations of the liner, progressively improving on all aspects, including strength, longevity and wear.

Simulation

FEA simulation was performed with multiple loading conditions namely, a linear load resulting when tool is deployed and in use. Secondary force and displacement when the detent actuates while opening/closing the tool.
